 Surprise!
Local officials got a big surprise when they unveiled a newly restored historical marker during ribbon cutting ceremonies for the reopening of the Apalachin Main Street Bridge on November 22.

Someone managed to slip in another marker. Instead of commemorating Apalachin's early settler Isaac Harris, this marker said "Joseph Barbara Memorial Bridge" and included a photo of the hamlet's infamous former resident.
Officials and spectators had a good chuckle over the joke, and no harm was done to the official historical marker.

On November 14, 1957, New York State Police interrupted a Mafia summit at Joseph Barbara's estate on McFall Road in Apalachin. The raid put Apalachin on the map, and proved that an organized crime syndicate did exist.
