Shame On You, Owego Apalachin School

The Owego/Apalachin School (OFA) recently mailed a letter to all parents, one for each student, asking them to support an effort to shop at K-Mart.  K-Mart is giving a kick back to the school "based on 0.25% of eligible purchases." (That's 1/4 of 1% or 25 cents per $100.00) In order to pay for mailing the letters (that is, ‘break even'), about $200 will have to be spent for each letter that was mailed.

This effort by the school will be sending shoppers out of town to do their holiday shopping, since there is no K-Mart in the school district.  This brings up the question - Should our tax dollars be spent to advertise and promote a business?  A business that is not in the school district? Did the school district consider how much the local merchants support school projects and activities?

As one Village of Owego merchant put it when she saw the letter, "Shame on you, Owego-Apalachin School District!"
