It's December 1976. Jose Lopez Portillo is sworn in as President of Mexico.

 The Democrats select Tip O'Neil as Speaker of the House.
 Billy Carter, brother of President-Elect Jimmy Carter, loses the mayoral election in Plains, Georgia.

 Actor Jack Cassidy, 49, father of David Cassidy and ex-husband of Shirley Jones, dies in a fire in his penthouse in West Hollywood.

 The nationwide Swine Flu inoculation program is stopped until health officials can determine if the shots are linked to recently reported cases of paralysis.

 The mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley, 74, dies of a heart attack. Daley served as mayor for 21 years.

 The Tioga County Council on the Arts ratifies a constitution and becomes a legal, non-profit corporation.

 The Owego Treadway is planning to build a 6,000 square foot convention center and an 8-story tower which will provide 117 guest rooms in the top seven stories. The convention center is expected to be completed by spring, the tower by 1979. 

 In Apalachin, three men (ages 34, 18, and 16) use a sawed-off shotgun to rob Krissel's Sunoco of $183. Ten minutes later, the three are stopped and arrested by a Vestal policeman who heard the description of the robbers on the police radio.

 Jesse Owens, 63, winner of three gold medals in the 1936 Olympics, is the guest speaker of PROBE at SUNY  Binghamton's Social Room. Owens talks about how adults can help young people achieve their goals.

 The cost of coffee is rising. Local vending machine owners say they may have to increase the price of a cup of coffee from 15 cents to 20 cents.

 Movies playing in local theaters include The Pink Panther Strikes Again, The Enforcer starring Clint Eastwood, Silver Streak, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, Nickelodeon, Walt Disney's The Shaggy DA ("He's running for office on all fours"), A Star is Born starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, and King Kong.

 Tuesday night TV shows include Happy Days, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Laverne & Shirley, Police Woman starring Angie Dickinson as Pepper and Earl Holliman as Crowley, Tony Orlando and Dawn, M*A*S*H, Rich Man, Poor Man (Book II), One Day at a Time, Police Story, Family, and Switch starring Robert Wagner as Pete and Eddie Albert as Mac.

 And the 1976 Hess Toy Truck - a 14-inch truck complete with working lights and miniature oil drums - costs $2.29.
