If I Look at You Twice
by Wayne Clark

If I look at you twice... don't be alarmed, I mean you no harm
If I look at you twice... it is because I have lost a lifetime of innocence

That terrible day when the towers came down
some of the ashes drifted silently into my soul

I have tried to wash them away with acts of love and caring
I have tried breathing the sweet fresh air of precious freedom

If I look at you twice its because I no longer presume kindness
If I look at you twice its because I am searching for loyal Americans

The kind I used to see in every restaurant, on every street corner
The kind I passed in the park and in the local stores and shops

Tomorrow will be different from today....tomorrow I will take more risks
Tomorrow I will steel myself for a brand new day full of new promise

I will walk with more spring in my step and smile at strangers
I will assume good not evil, I will aid the weak and tend the sick

I will inspire the poor, teach the young, comfort the old and lead by example
I will stop and smell the roses, look for opportunity, and make long plans

But if I look at you twice please, please, try to understand . . .
There are ashes on my soul and I am trying to find my fellow man
