 It's October 1976. Earl Butz, the Secretary of Agriculture, resigns amidst the controversy over a racist joke he made.
 
Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, 65, undergoes surgery for bladder cancer.

 In his second debate with Jimmy Carter, President Ford confuses listeners when he says "There is no Soviet domination in eastern Europe."' 

 Bob Cormack and Christian Chandler reach the summit of Mount Everest - the 2nd and 3rd Americans to do so. 

 An American student publishes an article which details how to build an atomic bomb.

 The Meadowlands football stadium opens in New Jersey.

 The Food and Drug Administration rules that cyclamate, an artificial sweetener, is too dangerous to be put back on the market.

 Elizabeth Taylor is engaged to marry John Warner.

 At the Country Music Association Awards, Dolly Parton is chosen Best Female Vocalist, Ronnie Milsap is named Best Male Vocalist, and Mel Tillis is chosen Entertainer of the Year.

 The Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Yankees 7 - 2 to win the World Series. 

 A citizens' group called The Impossible Dream Committee begins a fund raising campaign to raise $1 million to restore the CFJ pool in Johnson City.

 Archaeologists from SUNY Binghamton announce the discovery of 3,000-year-old Indian stone tools and artifacts behind IBM-Owego.

 More than 7,000 people pay from $7.50 to $15.00 per ticket to see Frank Sinatra sing at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Sinatra, dressed in a black leisure suit, opens the evening with I Sing the Songs and closes it with My Way.

 Tioga County buries a Bicentennial Time Capsule at the courthouse lawn. The contents of the 16-cubic-foot capsule, which is to be unearthed in 100 years, include a highschool yearbook, toys, watches, rulers, the flag, pens, bottle caps, county documents, and hedge clippers. It also contains letters written by President Ford and five other national, state, and local representatives to their successors. A marker is to be placed at the site of the time capsule.

 Movies playing in local theaters include The Return of a Man Called Horse,  Murder by Death, All the President's Men, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Disney's The Gnome- Mobile, and A Matter of Time starring Liza Minnelli and Ingrid Bergman.

 Sunday night TV shows include World of Disney; Sonny & Cher; The Six Million Dollar Man; Kojak; and Delvecchio, a crime-drama starring Judd Hirsch.
