Danny Short Memorial Golf Tournament a Great Success

The 4th Annual Danny Short Memorial Golf Tournament was held May 19 at the Newark Valley Golf Course by way of Tioga Scenic Railroad. Gary Short, brother of Daniel Short in whose memory the event is held, hosted the event. Daniel passed away from leukemia when he was 14-years-old. The tournament benefits young people with diseases and sicknesses in the community as a way of providing money to the families.

This year's tournament benefitted Jared Sibley, son of Jeff and Linda Sibley, who is battling a brain tumor. His treatments are very expensive and his family has other expenses as well. A record amount of over $1300 was realized thanks to the generosity of all the people who donated prizes, hole sponsors, and the participants in the tournament.

The first place team in the tournament was that of Ken Wolfe, Bob Watkins, Carol Watkins, and Floyd Washburn, at 10 under par. Second place teams consisted of Pat Mulligan, Pat Mulligan, Jr., Dale Kitchin, and Andy Cron at 9 under par. Third Place team was the team of Tom Short, Bob Berry, Walt Pickering, and Darryl Reynolds, at 7 under par. John Dougherty and Carol Watkins each won a prize for longest drive. Ed Darrow and Ann Cooke each won a prize for closest to the pin.

The organizers of the Danny Short Memorial Golf Tournament would like to offer a special thanks to Ty Stauder of Newark Valley who won the 50-50 drawing and gave $100 to the benefit, and a special thanks to Dr. Doug Watson who couldn't play this year but made a generous donation. Also, special thanks to Sam Thomas and the Community Bank for donating the plaques which were given out for first, second, and third placed teams.

Prizes were donated to this year's tournament by Shady Lawn Restaurant, Parkview Hotel, Mario's Pizza, Lenny's Family Restaurant, Tioga Sportsman's Inn, Tioga Country club, Tioga Scenic Railroad, Catatonk Golf Course, Newark Valley Golf Course, Scott Smith & Son, Mister Koffee, Spritz Hair Salon, Owego Agway, and Tony's Pizza under new ownership of Peter and Christen Vesho.

Gary would also like to thank Tioga Scenic Railroad for their help with the tournament, a great ride, and a wonderful meal. Also, a big thank you to Cleve Cleveland of Newark Valley Golf Course for having the tournament players back again this year. A special thanks to God for the beautiful day for golf!
