Owego Represented at National Police Memorial Lawride
Police officers from all over the country came to Washington DC
for three days in May to honor and memorialize the police officers killed
in the line of duty. Approximately 25,000 police officers rode law enforcement
and private motorcycles and participated in an escorted ride to the Police
Memorial Wall. At the wall, they held a candlelight vigil, announced 326
new names to be added to the wall, and placed wreaths on the wall where
the officers of different police departments have their names.
The Owego Police Department has had two officers killed in the
line of duty: Forrest A. Hall and Isaac Whiltse. Retired Police Officer
Gerald L. Pierce, and Officers Ralph Azersky and Guy Kulwanowski traveled
to Washington to participate in the Police Memorial Lawride. They rode
the police motorcycles in the memorial parade to the memorial wall and
placed wreaths at the positions on the police wall where the two deceased
officers' names had been placed.
The National Police Memorial Lawride is an annual event that
attracts police officers from every state in the nation and some foreign
countries.
