Downtown Owego is Still Alive & Well

On May 14, scaffolding was constructed next to the wall of 196 Front Street to reinforce and repair the side of that building which was damaged in a fire on July 1, 2000. Work is continuing on the interior of the old Goat Boy building which was also damaged in that fire which destroyed the Cracker Barrel building.
In other areas of the village, the young people of the Youth Court Program (coordinated by Eric Watkins of the Owego Police Department) have worked to keep downtown looking spiffy. They removed the red bows from the Christmas trees and spent a lot of time picking up litter from the sidewalks.
The Historic Markers were recently refurbished. Don Dewitt sandblasted the signs and Tim Tarbox repainted them. A private individual made a generous donation to help defray the costs.
The Village of Public Works removed the dead Christmas trees from the streets, and the local business owners have been planting flowers to freshen up the downtown.
The wonderful Farmer's Market is expanding this year. They will have fresh produce available at two locations - at Eckerd's parking lot on Tuesday mornings, and at Hickories on Friday afternoons starting in early July.
