The Apalachin Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind team was awarded the third place Division I trophy at the Region 12 competition held on March 10 at the Binghamton High School. The winning team members included Jessica Burrell, Jeanne Fallon, Matthew Guagliardo, Lynne Jones, Tessali Skiff, Sara Wasileski, and Tyler Watkins. John Fallon and Lara Jones coached the team. The competition consisted of two phases. In the first phase, the team presented a solution to a long-term problem on the subject of Wild Winged Wonders. Since last November, the team had been working on this presentation that consisted of a re-enactment of a Bird Olympics competition using team created puppets. The second phase of the competition consisted of presenting a solution to a spontaneous problem that the team did not see until the competition. The team had just five minutes to provide the solution that was judged. About 110 teams from the area competed for the honor of participating in the state tournament held on March 17 at Binghamton University. |
