It's May 1976. Bold Forbes wins the Kentucky Derby.

A severe earthquake hits Italy.

The Senate reports that for more than 40 years, the FBI has been electronically eavesdropping on Americans who were judged as not conforming to established policy, such as anti-war groups, black organizations, congressmen, reporters, dissidents, and radicals.

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale hits British Columbia. The quake is felt as far south as Seattle.

French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing arrives in the Concorde at an Air Force base outside Washington, D.C. for a bicentennial tour of the United States.

An earthquake occurs in a remote part of Russia. Although it measures 7.2 on the Richter scale, there are no casualties or destruction.

At the 28th Annual Emmy Awards, Mary Tyler Moore is chosen Best Actress in a comedy. Jack Albertson, star of Chico and the Man, is chosen Best Actor in a comedy. Kathryn Walker is chosen Best Actress in a drama for her role in The Adams Chronicles. Ed Asner is chosen Best Actor in a Drama for his work in Rich Man, Poor Man.

Frank Sinatra becomes engaged to Barbara Marx.

Karen Ann Quinlan, 22, is disconnected from her respirator.

The first commercial Concorde flights land at Dulles airport.

Johnny Rutherford wins the Indy 500 for the second time.

Ellis Island reopens for visitors.

K-Mart announces plans to open a store in the Binghamton Plaza.

Larkin's music store in Binghamton celebrates their 75th anniversary.

Tri-Cities Opera performs Puccini's La Boheme at the Forum. Tickets are $8 and $6.

Groundbreaking ceremonies are held for the new IBM Credit Union office at the corner of Day Hollow Road and Route 17C in Owego.

The Ti-Ahwaga Players present Arsenic and Old Lace at the Tioga Theater.

Vincent Price, Roddy McDowall, and Cora Browne appear in Charley's Aunt at the Forum in Binghamton.

Construction is underway on the new McDonald's in Owego. (See photo below.)

Ribbon cutting ceremonies are held at the new Park Settlement Bridge between Candor and Owego. The bridge is the longest laminated timber bridge in the country. (See photo below)

Three Tioga County Bicentennial Princesses are chosen. They are Dorleen Relyea, Chris Williams, and Laura LaDue. The princesses and all of the contestants participate in the Memorial Day Bicentennial Parade, one of the largest ever held in Owego.

At Tioga Park, a quarter horse race track in Nichols scheduled to open in July, a figure of a horse and rider is mounted on top of the 85-foot water tower. The steel-plated horse, which is 18' x 9.5' and weighs 1600 pounds, is mounted on a ball bearing assembly, allowing it to turn as a weathervane. The water tower is part of the park's fire protection system.

Wednesday night TV shows include Little House on the Prairie, TonyOrlandoandDawn, The Bionic Woman, Cannon, Baretta, Chicoand the Man, Hawk, StarskyandHutch, and The BlueKnight.
