Apalachin Community Press, March 2001

From the Principal's Desk
by William Motsko, Principal of Apalachin Elementary School

Hold on to your hats . . . and it's not just because of the March winds blowing. We are in for a flurry of activities over the next few weeks. For the family, we have the BC Icemen game on March 17 and our Family Dance Night on March 23. The children will have members of the CB Icemen here to visit us on Monday, March 5. Mrs. Hamed's second grade will be joined by on of the Channel 12 meteorologists on March 9 for breakfast . . . and maybe a shot at being a TV star.

Our Odyssey of the Mind Team will compete on Saturday, March 10, in Binghamton High school and our Mathalon Team will compete on Saturday March 31 at Newark Valley High School.

In between, we'll have Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast on March 16, and have a student council sponsored Talent Show on Thursday, March 16, from 7:00 pm until about 8:45 pm in the auditorium.

All of these activities lead up to our Open House which will be built on the theme of Sharing Hearts Build Caring Community. The Open House will take place on Thursday, April 5. Members of the community will be here to join in with the students and the staff and add to the evening. More on this as details are worked out. Mark the date.

The many dramatic changes in the weather create challenges for us. The goal is to have the children go out each day the weather allows. The problem come when the weather is warm in the morning and turns cols as the day progresses. The children want to go out . . . so my plea is to check the weather report and dress the children for the worst. If it doesn't occur, we can always have the students take off an article of clothing.

Anticipating the coming of spring is a very exciting time of the year. The students can sense it and their enthusiasm makes the job that much more challenging and enjoyable. It keeps us all young. I look forward to visiting with each of you during the many opportunities coming up in the near future.
