The Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 in Miami at Superbowl X.

Mr. Blackwell's 16th annual Worst Dressed List includes Caroline Kennedy, Helen Reddy, Nancy Kissinger, Bette Midler, Sally Struthers, and Princess Anne. Blackwell's Best Dressed List includes Nancy Reagan, Mary Tyler Moore, Rose Kennedy, Marisa Berenson, Princess Caroline of Monaco, and Diana Ross.

NBC and the Nebraska Educational Television Network have come up with identical logos (a stylized "N") and are disputing over which organization should use it. (NBC paid $1,000,000 to have someone create the logo; Nebraska Education TV paid $100 to have someone create the identical logo!)

Prices on the New York Stock Exchange soar to a two-year high. The Dow Jones Industrial average rises to 890.82.

A Federal Court refuses to give Richard Nixon control of the tapes and documents from his Presidential Administration.

Chinese Premier Chou En-lai, 78, dies of cancer.

Senator Robert C. Byrd, a Democrat from West Virginia, announces his candidacy for President.

British mystery writer Dame Agatha Christie dies at her home near London. The 85-year-old was the creator of Miss Jane Marple and Hercule Poirot, and was the author of "The Mouse Trap," the longest running play in British history.

Sara Jane Moore is sentenced to life in prison for her attempted assassination of President Ford.

The Food and Drug Administration bans Red Dye No. 2, the most widely used food coloring. The dye has caused malignant tumors in rats who were fed large quantities of the substance.

At the 33rd Golden Globe Awards One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is chosen Best Picture, and its stars, Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, are chosen Best Actor and Actress. Walter Matthau (The Sunshine Boys) and Ann-Margret (Tommy) win for Best Actor and Actress in a comedy or musical. Robert Blake and Telly Savalas both win as Best Actor in a TV drama. Lee Remick wins as Best Actress for her work in Jennie, Lady Randolph Churchill. Alan Alda and Cloris Leachman are chosen Best Actor and Actress in a TV comedy. Kojak is chosen Best TV drama, and BarneyMiller wins as Best TV comedy.

The supersonic Concorde flies its first commercial (passenger) flights. A British Airways Concorde flies from London to Bahrain, and an Air France Concorde flies from Paris to Rio de Janeiro.

The Chinese Year of the Dragon begins on January 31. Because the dragon is the most powerful of the animals, it promises to be a good year.

Westons in Vestal is having a going out of business sale.

The Tioga TV Cable Company plans to add a fourth station, WOR in New York City, to its service. The monthly cable fee will increase from $5 to $6.

Governor Hugh Carey orders the State University system to cut 300 full-time jobs by the end of next month. At SUNY-Binghamton, 76 employees lose their jobs.

SUNY-Binghamton President Clifford Clark proposes eliminating the Russian and Geography Departments, and several Masters and PhD programs.

Frank Sinatra, Jr., 31, performs at West Junior High School in Binghamton.

Seton Catholic High School in Endicott will close at the end of this school year because of declining enrollment. It will merge with Catholic Central High School in Binghamton, forming Seton Catholic Central. Two elementary schools - Christ the King in Endwell and St. Paul's School in Binghamton - will also close.

The latest fad is CB radios and sales of the radios are soaring.
