Making a Difference at AES
Mrs. Hamed's second graders entered a Make a Difference Day contest through Book-It. The students had to make a difference in the community related to literacy. The students wanted to get glasses for those less fortunate. They felt that some people were not able to read without glasses.

On Saturday, October 21, Mrs. Hamed's class marched in the high school homecoming parade. The theme this year was board games. The students made costumes and marched as a bunch of playing cards and chanted "Go Fish for Glasses."

The class successfully collected 115 pairs of glasses which will be sent to a third world country or recycled. The Lions Club has agreed to help the class distribute them.

On October 28, Mrs. Hamed's class had a Read-A-Thon. The students collected donations and sponsors. The class read for two hours and collected over $500. The money will go to the Lions Club to buy new glasses for children in our community who need them.

The students are anxiously awaiting the contest results. Whether they win or loose, the students are excited about the difference they made by working together.

Many thanks go out to the community members for their support and donations. The class would also like to thank Cornell Cooperative Connections for their contribution to the project.
