November 11 was originally celebrated as Armistice Day, and commemorated the end of World War I. An armistice or truce was reached at 11 o'clock on November 11, 1918 - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year - ending "The Great War," fought by soldiers like the one pictured here.
