At the Apalachin Elementary School

by Don Davis
of the Community Members Steering Committee

The first day of school went very well. I personally got there early to see my granddaughter get off the bus to start her first day at Apalachin Elementary School. Nicole was all smiles as were most all of the new students, anxious to start a new challenge in life, meet new friends, and spend their day with a teacher who will teach them many new things in their full school day.

I'm sure these little ones will teach their teacher some new things, too! Good luck to Miss Watson, Mrs. Pritchard, and Mrs. LaCombe. They taught Miss Guilfoyle so much, she moved to 1st Grade.

It was a great day, lots of tear, and lots of cameras. Mrs. Hammer should have enough pictures for everyone. Ask her at "Meet the Teachers" night.

Meet the Teachers Night

Thursday, October 5 is "Meet the Teachers" Night at 6:30 pm. Food will be served from 6:00 pm until it's all gone. There will be hot dogs for $1.00, Pizza for 50 cents, Chips for 25 cents, and soda for 50 cents. Join us for supper, then meet the teachers! See you there.

Craft Fair & BBQ

The Parents Group will sponsor a Craft Fair with a Chicken BBQ on Saturday, October 28, at the Apalachin Elementary School.

From the Principal's Desk

The new school year is off to a great start. We have had our SAFE bus and bus drivers in to teach safety on the school bus. We have our gym re-opened afater being refinished and everyone has returned with a "can do "attitude."

We have some new rules to follow when it comes to the giving of prescribed and over the counter drugs. The state has become much more stringent about when and under what conditions Mrs. Tulsey, our school nurse, can administer drugs. If you have any questions, call Mrs. Tulsey. Please remember that she doesn't make the rules, she just has to live within them.

On October 5, we will be hosting our "Meet the Teacher Night" beginning about 5:45 pm with food available and 6:00 pm for the Book Fair. Classes will be open using the following staggered schedule: K-2, 6:15 - 7:15; Sp. Areas, 6:30 - 7:30; 3-5, 6:45 - 7:45.

There will be a special meeting for Grade 5 parents/guardians at 7:30 in the auditorium to discuss changes in this year's program. Parking will be available at St. Margaret Mary's Church with a shuttle bus running about every 15 minutes.

Friday, October 6 is a Superintendent's Conference Day. Students will not be in attendance. This will be an in-service day for the staff.

Saturday, October 21 will be Homecoming at Owego Free Academy. At least one of our classes, Mrs. Hamed's Second Grade, will be participating in the parade. They will be "fishing" for used glasses that will be donated to the local Lions Club. They will also be collecting used glasses throughout the month in the main office at AES. They will also be having a Read-A-Thon the following Saturday at the school.

On October 28, AESP+G will be hosting its first annual Craft Fair at AES, under the direction of Mrs. Tracy Manning. Mark your calendars for a fun day.

October will end with Fall Parties and Parade on October 31. The theme for the parade will be announced soon. Plan on attending to see our children and take pictures.
