Open House at Apalachin Fire Dept
In commemoration of Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14, the Apalachin Fire Department will be sponsoring an Open House to encourage residents to come in and learn about fire safety. The Open House will be on Saturday, October 14, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Station #1 on Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin.
Events at the Open House will include the 5th Annual Firehouse Chili Challenger, fire extinguisher demonstrations, "Meet the Firefighter" (watch him put on complete fire fighting gear), a visit from "Freddie" the Fire Trick, equipment displays, car extrication demonstrations, ambulance information, and water sports (have kids put out the fire in the "house").
There will also be prizes, food, handouts, a visit from the Friends of the Apalachin Library, and fun for the entire family.

This year, the Firehouse Chili Challenge will be divided into two categories - professional (career) and amateur (volunteer). The winning prize is a savings bond. Please bring a quart of your best chili concoction to the fire station by Noon on October 14 for judging at 12:30 pm.

The "Great Escape" National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) is sponsoring two contests (one for the general public and one for families of firefighters) to encourage the public to develop and practice a home fire escape plan. Grand prize is a "great escape" to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, for four. Official entry forms must be submitted to the NFPA by October 31, 2000, and will be available at Fire Station #1.
