The Bridges of Tioga County
The Silk Street Bridge was purchased by the town of Newark Valley in 1888. The bridge is a lenticular (parabolic) pony truss bridge built by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company of East Berlin, Connecticut. According to the Newark Valley Historical Society, the Silk Street Bridge "is one of only perhaps 50 such bridges known to survive in the United States." The bridge has undergone many repairs and improvements over the years including pavement over the original wood planks on its deck. The bridge still carries vehicular traffic (3-ton limit). No work is scheduled on the bridge in the near future.
