It's May 1975. The first Vietnamese refugees arrive in the United States.

Foolish Pleasure wins the 101st Kentucky Derby.

Moe Howard, 78, the last of the 3 Stooges, dies of lung cancer. He was preceded in death by stooges Shemp Howard and Larry Fine.

The Mayaguez, an unarmed American merchant ship, is fired upon and seized by the Cambodian Navy. The ship and crew are taken into the Cambodian port of Kompongsom. President Ford considers it "an act of piracy."

American military forces retake the Mayaguez near Koh Tang Island.

Junko Tabei, 35, of Japan becomes the first woman to climb Mt. Everest.

An outdoor swimming pool is being built at the White House. The heated 20' x 50' pool will cost $52,417. Landscaping will cost 9,000. The White House's indoor pool, which was built for Franklin D. Roosevelt, was covered-over during the Nixon administration.

The United States conducts a nuclear weapon test at Pahute Mesa, Nevada. The explosion is 50 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Japan in WWII.

Summer Bartholomew, 23, of California, is crowned Miss USA

Bobby Unser wins the Indy 500.

The Philadelphia Flyers win hockey's Stanley Cup.

At the 27th Annual Emmy Awards, Upstairs, Downstairs is chosen Best Drama and The Mary Tyler Moore Show is chosen Best Comedy. Acting awards go to Jean Marsh (Upstairs, Downstairs), Robert Blake (Baretta), Valerie Harper (Rhoda), and Tony Randall (The Odd Couple).

Skyline Amusement Park in Owego opens for the season.

Tri-Cities Opera performs "The Magic Flute" at the Capri Theater in Binghamton.

Rod Serling, 50, suffers a heart attack and is hospitalized in Ithaca.

The Vestal Planning Board approves a request by Sugarman's Eynon Drug to move into the former Stars store in the Campus Plaza in Vestal.

WSKG Public Television celebrates seven years of broadcasting.

Hickories Park officially opens for the season.

The Tioga Theater re-opens with the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players in "Everything in the Garden" starring Jay Purdy. The 68-year-old theater has undergone a year-long renovation which included painting and repairing walls, and installing new seats.

The Apalachin Jaycees hope to buy the former St. Margaret Mary's church building on New Street to use as a community center.

Tuesday night TV shows include Adam-12, Good Times, Happy Days, M*A*S*H, Hawaii Five-O, Marcus Welby, and Barnaby Jones.
