Prudential Youth Leadership Institute

Tioga County youth will have the opportunity to take part in a highly acclaimed national youth leadership training program to be held in Owego.

What is it?

The Prudential Youth Leadership Institute (PYLI) is a dynamic 30-hour community leadership training for selected youth from across Tioga County, New York, and Bradford County, Pennsylvania. It includes three days of skill development and instruction in goal setting, team building, project planning, and decision making, plus hands-on field exercises, a community service project, and a graduation ceremony.

Who is it for?

It is for youths in grades 8-11 who would like to learn leadership skills in order to make the community a better place to live. All young people with a positive attitude, commitment to strengthening the community, and a desire to build their own leadership skills are invited to apply for admission.

Why is it being offered?

In support of America's Promise to Youth and as a part of the National "Spirit of Community" Initiative developed by Prudential Insurance company, Youth Service America, the Center for Creative Leadership and Points of Light Foundation, this training is offered to encourage and engage youth leaders to lead their community in service.

Who is sponsoring it?

With the help of Prudential, a collaboration of Guthrie Healthcare System, and Cornell Cooperative Extension, Tioga County, New York, along with civic, education, youth and business organizations in Bradford and Tioga Counties.

When and where is it?

It is being held Friday - Sunday, November 19, 20, and 21, 1999, at El Rancho De Paz in Owego, New York. Students are also welcome to attend the PLYI on November 5, 6, and 7, 1999, at Watson Homestead, Painted Post, New York. Students are encouraged to choose whichever institute is most convenient for them.

How do the young people apply?

They can fill out an application available from their school principal, counselor, or youth organization leader. Or for an application, contact Eileen Sperl at Guthrie Healthcare System (570-882-4229) or colleen Dewey-Wright at Cornell Cooperative Extension (607-687-4020). Applications must be received by October 15, 1999.

How will they be selected?

Schools and youth organizations are encouraged to make the applications available as widely as possible to all youth. Applications will be reviewed by members of the Bradford and Tioga Counties Regional Advisory Committee. Youth will be notified of selection by October 22, 1999.
