Breast Cancer Screening Event
in Apalachin on June 25

No cost/low cost mammograms will be offered for eligible women on Friday, June 25, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm, at the Churn Dash quilt shop in Apalachin. The Tioga County Health Department in conjunction with The Healthy Living Partnership and the Lourdes "Mission in Motion" Mammovan are offering the screenings.

Jean Crowningshield, owner of the Churn Dash, decided to host this event after several volunteers at the Churn Dash who were making cotton hats for women undergoing radiation and or chemotherapy treatments realized that screening mammograms were not easily accessible to the women of rural Tioga County.

It is anticipated that more than 12,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year in New York State and 3,500 deaths will occur from this disease. A mammogram will help find breast tumors as early as two years before they can be felt. Experts agree that early screening and detection are very important. With early detection, breast cancer survival rates approach 95%. All women over the age of 40 should have a yearly mammogram. The Churn Dash is located at 4538 Route 434 in Apalachin, near Forest Hill Road.
