Wanted: River Boat Pilot

Waterman Conservation Education Center is accepting applications for the position of River Boat Pilot. From May through October, the center offers guided tours of the Susquehanna River aboard the Susquehanna Shuttle. These two- and three-hour tours take visitors along a gentle stretch of the river, an area which was the same route taken by steamships the 1870s. Along the way, visitors are shown some of the old plantation houses along the river. The trips also allow viewing of Waterman Center's Hiawatha Island, an historic island between Owego and Apalachin.

River boat pilots need to be familiar with small engines and boat operations. They will be required to obtain a Joint Pilot and Engineer's license as well as first aid and CPR certification. Waterman Boat Pilots also act as tour guides and so are expected to learn about the plants and animals and other things which can be seen along the trip. Training will be provided. For more information and an application, call Waterman Center at (607) 625-2221.
