Antique Car Club Supports Camp Ahwaga

The Tioga Region of the Antique Car Club of America started its annual charitable contributions by giving a check for $200 to Camp Ahwaga, a non-profit summer education and recreational day program for handicapped children of Tioga County. Jim Pritchard, Director of Camp Ahwaga, gave a presentation on the camp to the members of the Antique Car Club during their January meeting.

Camp Ahwaga, which is located at the Owego Elementary School, is run by a professional staff, most of whom are recent college graduates. The camp takes in about 75 children during the summer from every corner of Tioga County. They do not have to pay to attend the camp. The majority of the children are from low income families.

In addition to class time and therapy (occupation, speech, physical, etc.), the children have the opportunity to take field trips. "We try to incorporate a lot of fun activities. We want them to learn, but still have a fun time. We don't want the kids to feel it's an extension of school," said Pritchard.

It costs the camp $1,000 for each child who attends. "We need to raise $75,000 over a period of a year to operate the camp," explained Pritchard. "We really do appreciate our supporters."
