LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Supervisor Sweeney Did Her Job

It appears that Mr. Castellucci does not know the proper definition for megalomania. Webster's New World Dictionary defines megalomania as: a mental disorder characterized by delusions of grandeur, wealth, power, etc. The key word being delusions. As far as the voters of the Town of Owego are concerned, Supervisor Sweeney was exercising her power as our chief executive officer. Perhaps he would prefer the Town Supervisor to be a rubber stamp for the town board instead of an independent and decisive chief executive officer.

Frankly, I voted for Carol Sweeney when she ran for Town of Owego Supervisor for precisely that reason. I wanted a Supervisor who would take charge of town affairs, one who would keep tight reign on fiscal matters.

The Town of Owego board members were elected to act as representatives of the people of the Town of Owego. To voice our concerns regarding policy, initiate discussion that benefit different parts of the town. Not to whine like spoiled children "We were not informed" when Supervisor Sweeney did her job. Quite frankly it does not heighten my regard for "the majority" of the Board.

As to the Park Committee, shame on them. Part of their job is to be an oversight for the Parks Department. Our system of government is that of checks and balances to prevent any one government official from abusing the system. Because of decisive action and prudent restraint by Ms. Sweeney and Mr. Bent, the Town of Owego benefitted from the removal of an official who was misusing his power.

As to Mr. Castellucci's tirade, there are no other important issues in government that of justice. Mr. Hammond was accorded all the rights and privileges he deserved. Our community was well served by the sound judgement of Supervisor Sweeney and Councilmen Brent.
