Spelling Bee Raises Funds for Foundation

Can your friends and family spell moline or tsunami? If they can, they may want to consider entering next year's Owego-Apalachin Foundation for Excellence in Education's Adult Spelling Bee.

Trabucco Chevrolet's triskadekaphobes won the 1998 trophy for first place. They competed with eleven other teams from local businesses and community organizations to help raise over $2,000 for the Owego-Apalachin Foundation.

Foundation Vice-President Scott Smith said, "It was a lot of fun. I found myself playing along with the teams from the audience." Judge Vincent Seguelia helped the Foundation by being the pronouncer for the evening. Ronald Dougherty, Robert Simpson, and Paul Bartlow judged the spelling of the words by the teams. Several lucky students were chosen by a raffle to sound a gong whenever a team spelled a word incorrectly. "Jacko" from STAR 105.7 entertained the audience between rounds and was Master of Ceremonies for the event.

The foundation will use the money raised from the spelling bee and other events to fund grants that will be awarded in January, 1999. Grants are given to support educational programs within community.
