Alfred C. Fuller, the original Fuller Brush Man, dies in Hartford Connecticut at the age of 88. He began selling brushes door-to-door in 1906 and by 1956 his business had weekly sales of $1.6 million.

Gerald Ford, 60, is sworn in as the 40th Vice President of the United States.

John Glenn announces his candidacy for the US Senate.

The Pirates of the Caribbean ride opens at Disney World's Magic Kingdom.

Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Thos receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Kissinger donates his share of the money to a fund for the children of killed or missing-in-action servicemen. Le Duc Thos refuses the prize.

Nelson Rockefeller announces he will resign after 15 years as governor of New York.

In Italy, John Paul Getty III is freed after being kidnaped six months ago.

Buffalo Bill's O. J. Simpson becomes the first NFL player to rush more than 2,000 yards in a season.

Singer Bobby Darin, best known for his rendition of "Mack the Knife" dies of heart failure at age 37.

The Ti-Ahwaga Players present "The Last of the Red Hot Lovers."

The first major snowstorm of the season leaves 10 inches of snow.

At Tioga County's first murder trial in 13 years, Bruce Ketcham, 28, is found guilty of murder. Mrs. Kathleen Apgar pleaded guilty early last month to second degree robbery for her role in the crime.

The Town of Owego bans minibikes and trail bikes from town parks.

Another snowstorm leaves a foot of snow four days before Christmas. Schools and offices close.

It's a dark Christmas - due to the energy crisis, there are no outdoor lights on this year.

Saturday night TV shows include "M*A*S*H," "Emergency," "All in the Family," "Bob Newhart," "The Carol Burnett Show," and "Griff."

And we say good-bye to 1973, a year of CB radios, Pet Rocks, and new words such as biofeedback, point in time, space shuttle, pedestrian mall, and quadraphonic.
