River Island Bound at Owego

by Emma Sedore

Sometimes, looking back in history is like using a stereoscope. First you simply look at the picture, then you look at the objects in the picture individually. Finally, you have to almost daydream, with your eyes not actually looking at anything, and like magic, the scene is three-dimensional. You feel as though you are physically in the picture. That is when your heart starts to pound. I believe it is the closest anyone can get to going back in time.

The reason for this observation is because I have recently seen a musical production called River Island Bound by Chuck Knauf, an Owego native now living in Baltimore. It was presented at the Owego Middle School by the very talented Ti-Ahwaga Players from October 15 through 18.

The story itself is based on an event that happened right here in our community several years ago. Of course, I am referring to Hiawatha Island. From the first act when the chorus opened with "As Paddles Circle on their Track" to the last song of Act I, "With Paddles Up and Paddles Down," I was focused. I didn't need a stereoscope.

Act II, my heart was pounding. All I needed was one of those beautiful long dresses being worn on stage. When James Osborne sang "It's My Life" to Anne Schoonover, who played the female lead of Jean, you believed it.

Did you see it? If not, you really missed the boat.
