November will provide us with a new cross level team with an emphasis on caring and sharing. The overall theme will be communicated in the near future. It will also be a time to report student progress to you in the form of a report card and/or a parent teacher conference. Report cards are scheduled to come out on November 20. If there is to be a conference, it will also occur about that same time. Conferences may be requested by the home or the school.

New York will begin a new testing program this year in English/Language Arts and in Math in grades 4, 8, and at the High School. An informational meeting regarding the new testing program will take place on November 19 at 7:00 pm in our cafeteria. Our emphasis will be on grade 4, but the information will be important for all parents. More information will be coming out in the future. Please mark your calendar and plan on attending this important meeting.

Providing a safe environment for our children continues to be an area we need to work on. One area is, if you are in to pick up your children. Please make a point to stop in the office, sign in and pick up a visitor's pass if you are going beyond the front lobby area, We attempt to limit extra people in the halls, so we can account for everyone.

Another area we have become concerned about is, what children are bringing to school and what they are bringing it in. Laser pointers have become easy and cheap to acquire. They have the potential to be distracting, but more importantly, that can cause injury if aimed at the eye. Please discourage their purchase and do not allow them to come to school.

We have also had a problem with some models of book bags this year. If your child has a bag with the stretchy cords on it, you should consider cutting them off. There have been instances where the cords have gotten caught as children attempted to exit the bus, creating a dangerous situation for the child.

Things to Remember

There will be a food and toy drive after Thanksgiving. Contact the school or Apalachin Lions Club.
Jim Boland, a sales representative for Coca-Cola bottler Keystone Beverage of Binghamton, gave a presentation last month ot Mrs Smith's 5th grade class at AES. The students, who are learning about truck drivers, enjoyed seeing Jim's truck and hearing about his duties and responsibilities. They each received a free drink and a key chain with a Coke bottle on it.
