Fire Prevention Week

Program for 5th Graders

National Fire Prevention week is October 4 - 10 and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tioga County along with Tioga County Fire Departments and Tioga County Schools will "Kick Off" their 7-week 4-H Fire Prevention Program.

The Fire Prevention Program reaches over 700 Tioga County 5th Graders and is taught by instructors who are trained volunteer firemen and teachers from the community.

This program includes seven sessions:

How a Fire Burns

Fire Extinguishers and Their Use

Classes of Fire

Identification of Fire Hazards

Developing a Home Escape Plan

Wood Stove Safety

Vocations in the Fire Service

Each participant is required to develop a display on Fire Prevention or do a Fire Prevention Scrapbook. These projects are then judged to select school or community winners, who, along with their parents, are invited to the Tioga County Fire Prevention Awards Banquet. The top two winners receive $50 savings bonds. The community receives the benefits of knowledge gained.
