Tossed Match Starts House Fire

The Apalachin Fire Department, with assistance from the Vestal Fire Department, responded to a house fire on August 9 at around 7:15 p.m. at 15 Billings Road, Apalachin. According to fire officials, Lynda Dunham (owner of the property with her husband Charles) was in the basement when she lit a candle and threw the match into the garbage. The match then started the garbage on fire, burning through the basement up into the rafters through the walls of the house and into the attic. Mr Charles Dunham was not at home at the time of the fire. Several firefighters received minor injuries. The basement and kitchen area of the house sustained severe fire damage. The rest of the house has severe heat, smoke and water damage.
