QDear Fitness Explorer,
What do you think is the best type of cardiovascular exercise? I'm starting an exercise program and wonder what type of cardio exercise would best for me to do if I'm trying to loose weight.
A The type of cardiorespiratory exercise you choose should be based on your fitness goal, your interests, your lifestyle, and the availability of equipment.
To answer your question regarding any one activity being better than another - any cardiorespiratory activity that uses larger muscle groups and is rhythmic in nature can be used. I recommend walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, and taking aerobic classes. All are great forms of cardio exercise and a lot of fun!
If you're just starting, you may want to monitor the intensity level
at which you perform these activities. Low to moderate intensity, 50% to
60% of maximum heart rate, is considered a safe starting point. Since you're
trying to loose body fat, your goal should be to progress to a higher cardiovascular
intensity level, 65% to 85% of maximum heart rate. Higher intensity cardio
burns more calories and more absolute fat in a shorter period of time.
Have fun!
