Scrap Metal Processing Plant Opens

Upstate Shredding, LLC, a subsidiary of Ben Weitsman & Son, Inc., opened their new scrap metal processing plant on Route 38 north of the Village of Owego. According to the Tioga County Industrial Development Agency, the new facility will generate 30 jobs and result in a stronger market for scrap metal recycling in the Southern Tier.

The state-of-the-art facility houses a Newell 120-140 wet shredding system driven by two natural gas fired Waukesha engines with a combined output of 5,000 horsepower. Also included is a Wendt Eddy Sort System for non-ferrous metal reclamation. The facility will process scrap metals and vehicles into various grades for shipping by rail to recycling markets throughout the Northeast and is the largest such facility on the East Coast. This $20 million operation was funded locally, and received a $300,000 state grant from the Office of Research and Market Development.

The plant will be recycling most of Broome and Tioga County's scrap metal, in addition to receiving scrap from all over central New York.
