Danny Short Memorial Golf Tournament

Train Ride, Golf Combined to Benefit Sick Children

Event Raises $1100 for Dan Jackson

The 1st Annual Danny Short Memorial Golf Tournament was held on May 23 in Newark Valley to benefit children with leukemia or other illnesses. Danny Short of Apalachin, in whose memory the tournament was held, passed away from leukemia in 1961 when he was only 14-years-old.

This year's tournament was held to benefit Dan Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lenny Jackson of Owego. Dan is in remission from leukemia now, but still must undergo more treatments. Lenny says the outlook for Dan is very good at this time, and that Dan hopes to play in next year's tournament.

Gary Short of Owego, brother of Danny Short, put together the event with the help of the staff of the Tioga Scenic Railroad. He made arrangements with the Tioga Scenic Railroad to transport 76 golfers and their clubs to the Newark Valley Golf Course. Gary also made arrangements with Cleve Cleveland, owner of the course, to have 38 golf carts lined up by the railroad tracks.

At 8:00 am, the golfers boarded the train at the depot in Owego The train left the station in Owego at 8:40. A continental breakfast was served on the train.

After a pleasant one-hour ride on the train, they arrived in Newark Valley. The golfers left the train with their clubs, loaded them on the golf carts, and went to their assigned holes. They had a train whistle start at 10:00 am.

The day was perfect for golfing -bright sunshine with temperatures in the 70s. Things went smoothly and all the golfers had a great time. They returned to the train at 2:30 pm.

While everyone was playing golf, Steven May and his crew from the Tioga Scenic Railroad prepared a delicious meal of soup, salad, and marinated chicken sandwich which was served in the dining cars. After the meal, everyone moved to the open air car for a scenic ride back to Owego.

Gary Short, the tournament's arranger, was "forced" into being the Master of Ceremonies and gave out the prizes.

First, second, and third place plaques were provided by Sam Thomas and Community Bank of Owego. A drawing was held for prizes which were donated by area merchants including Parkview Hotel, Metros Restaurant, Lenny Family Restaurant, Tioga Sportsman's Inn, Marios Pizza, Tioga Country Club, Catatonk Golf Course, Newark Valley Golf Course, Scott Smith & Son's Gas & Goodies Stores, Jim's Truck Plaza, 96 Connection.

Gary Short thanks all the merchants of the area who donated to this very good cause. They and all the golfers who participated made it possible to raise over $1,100 for Dan Jackson's family.

Gary gives special thanks to the staff of the Tioga Scenic Railroad and Cleve Cleveland of the Newark Valley Golf Course for making this event possible, and a very special thanks to God for a safe trip and the beautiful day.
