June is here at last! The students are happy! The teachers are happy! The parents are happy?
It's a very busy month and also very important. The little one you watched get on the bus for his or her first day of school will soon have completed a full year. See, Mom and Dad, they got through it OK. Each year will go by faster and faster until it's 5th grade and the big Moving Up day is finally here and off to Owego we go.
This year, as in many other years, I have spent a lot of time at AES and have seen a lot of good things. Some early mornings, I see kids on their way to the classroom with bookbags bigger than they are.
I can say one thing for sure, they seem to all behave very well. I was in the principal's office and didn't even see a rubber hose, so I guess between the parents and the teachers, you guys are doing a great job with the youth of tomorrow.
I would like you all to know that as your community representative on the steering committee at AES, I see great things. A very clean school. A drug-free school. A very well organized school. A a great working staff, from the principal to the secretaries, to the teachers and teachers' aides, custodians, and school nurse, cafeteria employees, bus drivers, and parent volunteers.
We're all working hard to make things better. See you in the fall - Have a great summer.
Smith Honored for Excellence in Teaching
We are very pleased to announce that Mrs. Cindy Smith, 5th grade teacher, has been selected as one of five state finalists for excellence in teaching math, science and technology. She will be receiving a $750 grant from the National Science Foundation and will be competing at the national level later this year.
Students' Signatures in Space
On May 20 and 21, all of our students and staff had an opportunity to sign a poster that will be going up in space with the John Glenn flight in the fall. This opportunity was made possible through the Coalition for Better Schools and our friends at Lockheed Martin. In addition some of our second and fifth grade students received awards for projects they completed as part of the Embrace Space Project sponsored by Lockheed Martin.
June 19 - Last Day of School
The last day for students will be June 19. The fifth grade Moving Up Ceremony will take place at 10:00 am after a brunch for students and family. The remainder of the student body will be dismissed at 12:45 pm for the summer.
