Apalachin Train Station Gets New Life
Station to Become Ice Cream Parlor
One of Apalachin's most historic landmarks has a new lease on life: the
old Delaware/Lackawanna train station on Route 434 was purchased recently
by David Dzuba of Binghamton who plans to open an ice-cream parlor.
Dzuba will also open a retail business in the old station, and hopes
to interest other businesses to occupy another portion of the building.
The station, which has sat vacant for many years, will be restored to the
turn-of-the-century era. The building has electrical service but currently
there is no sewage or septic system. Pictured above is the station as it
appears today. Below is the interior view of the freight processing room
- freight to be shipped would enter through the door on the right, be weighed
at the scale (center of photo), and exit via the door on the left to be
loaded on to the rail cars.
Last year, the Owego-Apalachin Middle School Architectural Modeling Club
drew up plans to renovate the old station as a club project. The students
envisioned the station as the Whistle Stop Restaurant and estimated it
would cost $150,000 to purchase the station and $34,727 to renovate it.
Dzuba said his ice-cream parlor will open this spring.
