O-A School District Establishes

Pre-Kindergarten Study

Advisory Board to Report to Board of Education in Spring

The Owego-Apalachin Board of Education received a plan to conduct the legislatively mandated feasibility study of prekindergarten education at its meeting on November 14. The plan follows the requirements outlined in chapter 436 on the laws of New York State. This act requires every school district in the state to conduct a study to determine if the implementation of a prekindergarten is in the best interest of the school district and community. This program provides an opportunity for prekindergarten funding for four-year old children over a five-year phase-in period. The completed study must be reported to the Board of Education by the end of the school year. Current plans call for a report of the Board of Education by the middle of March, 1998.

The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edward J. Reid, will be convening the Advisory Board to conduct the study of feasibility of providing a prekindergarten program. This Advisory Board is to be made up of members of the Board of Education, teachers and administrators, parents, community members and child care and early education providers from the Owego Apalachin school community. Individuals interested in being considered for membership on the Advisory Board are encouraged to call his office at 687-6224. Advisory Board participation will require attendance at several evening meetings per month over the next four to five months.
