Gettysburg Monuments Plate for Motorcycles

HARRISBURG- Pennsylvania State Rep. Timothy L. Pesci, D-Armstrong/Indiana, announced he intends to introduce legislation that would allow motorcyclists in that state to purchase Gettysburg commemorative license plates. A portion of the cost would go to fund the restoration and preservation of Pennsylvania's monuments at Gettysburg.

Pesci said the bill would compliment legislation already proposed by Rep. Harry Readshaw that would create a state board to ;muster private donations to preserve the state's 111 monuments on the Adams County battlefield. A second Readshaw bill would authorize a commemorative license plate for cars and trucks with a portion of the fee for the plate going to the monuments project.

"I've received feedback from numerous motorcyclists that they'd like to purchase Gettysburg plates for their cycles, too," said Pesci.

"It's my understanding Pennsylvania has never had a commemorative plate for motorcycles. What better subject to begin with than Gettysburg?"

Pesci, a Vietnam veteran, emphasized that his legislation would give the state Department of Transportation the freedom to create an "appropriate design" using the current gold on blue color scheme.

"We don't want to load up the plate," Pesci said, "Just a simple slogan or image that dose not interfere with the ability to read the registration number."

Pesci expects to introduce the bill in late January or early February.
