Walking Tours
A new series of Walking Tours in downtown Owego will be presented by the
staff and volunteers of the Tioga County Historical Society (TCHS). Tours
will be given on the third Saturday at 11:00 am, starting at the Historical
Society Museum. Seven tours are planned for the months of April through
October. Each tour will highlight different features of Owego. Participants
may sign up for one tour, or all seven. Cost will be $5 per tour for the
general public and $2.50 for the TCHS members. The series price is $30,
and $15 for members. Tour dates and topics are:
April 19 - Medicine in Owego:
Where doctors lived and worked. Also, a look at the new exhibit, Send for
the Doctor.
May 17 - Architecture:
Learn about a variety of building styles.
June 21 - Historic Characters:
Interesting people, from the first settlers to modern times.
July 19 - Railroads, River & the Town:
How and why Owego developed the way it did.
August 16 - Hotels and Theatres: A look at the social life of Owego.
September 20 - The Civil War and the "Underground Railroad":
A look at the "homefront."
October 18 - Industry and Manufacturers:
The places and people who made such things as gloves, pianos, mica lamp
shades, and more.
Send for the Doctor: A History of Medicine in Tioga County
The Tioga County Historical Society will open its new exhibition, Send
for the Doctor: A History of Medicine in Tioga County, with a wine and
cheese reception on Wednesday, April 9, between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Send
for the Doctor will highlight many aspects of medicine in Tioga County's
history, including druggists and doctors, patent medicines such as Ely
Brothers cream balm, and facilities such as Glenmary Sanitarium and Tioga
General Hospital. Medical implements, photographs, medicine bottles and
other objects, from both the society's and private collections, will be
exhibited from April through August 1997.
Looking for New Members
The Board of the Tioga County Historical Society is hoping to increase
the membership and support of the Historical Society and Museum. Membership
levels range from $10 to $100. Benefits of membership include: free use
of the research library, discounts on books and other gift shop items,
and reduced fees for walking tours and workshops. Membership forms are
available at the museum.
